19/3/25: NPW Chairman Steve Baker OBE attended a Newbury Pubwatch meeting which was held in the town centre BID offices.
The recipient of the award was Warwick Heskins. He has been a long-term publican in Newbury town centre for over ten years. The tenant of a local traditional pub, the Catherine Wheel, which has appeared in the last 6 CAMRA good beer guides.
Warwick has been the Chair of Newbury pubwatch for the past six years and has worked closely with the licensing officer and uniformed officers from Thames Valley Police, and with Licensing Officers from West Berkshire Council, to promote Newbury as a safe town to enjoy a night out.
He has also recently resigned as the Chair of Newbury BID which he served for nearly four years.
Prior to moving to Newbury, Warwick operated a pub, The Maiden Over in Lower Early, Reading, and was the Chair of Woodley pubwatch for just under two years.
Steve Baker said: “It was great to be able to attend the Newbury meeting and recognise the service that Warwick has given to his Pubwatch. The local community should be grateful that there are people such as Warwick who are dedicated to keeping their pubs a safe place to socialise”.
Steve also acknowledged the strong support from the BID, Police and Council who all attended the meeting to give updates on what is happening in the town.
