COPELAND’S Neighbourhood Policing Team has partnered with Crimestoppers and Whitehaven PubWatch on a campaign to encourage people to report crime in the area.
The initiative focuses on tackling drug use, violence, and poor behaviour within the night-time economy.
While police continue to urge people to report offences directly, the partnership also promotes 100% anonymous reporting through Crimestoppers.
Awareness materials, including posters and social media messages, will highlight how people can share information safely and confidentially.
Joe Murray QPM, National PubWatch Regional Representative said: “Whitehaven PubWatch is one of the most active schemes in the country, given the recent decision by members to ban drug users for 5 years.
He said the partnership “shows the determination of licensees to create a safer environment for people to enjoy themselves when out in the night-time economy.”
Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, welcomed the initiative, saying it will help keep communities safe and encourage responsible behaviour.
He said: “We want residents and visitors to go out and enjoy everything our local nightlife has to offer in Whitehaven. Whitehaven is a great town that’s thriving and has so much to offer residents and visitors alike.
“However, we will not tolerate aggressive, harassing or dangerous behaviour. Everyone deserves to feel safe in the night-time economy.”
Allen added that schemes like PubWatch have a proven record in reducing alcohol-related crime and improving safety in town centres.
