National Pubwatch has recognised Robert Humphreys with an Award of Merit for his contribution to partnership working.
The Award of Merit, sponsored by GBG, acknowledges the valuable contributions that many individuals have made to the success of pubwatch schemes around the country.
During his many years of service in the pub and hospitality sector Robert has contributed enormously to public safety in the night-time economy and partnership working.
A trained hotelier with UK and international experience, he spent twenty years with Bass, latterly as Public Relations Director of its brewing division. He launched and ran the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group in 1993, supporting the hospitality and brewing industry at Westminster.
In 2015 he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours for services to alcohol policy.
His volunteer roles have included directorships of the Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management Association, the Grace Theatre, the Proof of Age Standards Scheme, and the British Guild of Beer Writers, as well as trusteeship of industry charity Only a Pavement Away.
He is a Non-Executive Director of the Society of Independent Brewers and a Trustee of the National Brewery Heritage Trust. He served as Vice Chairman of Best Bar None from its launch until December 2022.
“I’m greatly honoured by NPW’s award – and have been proud and delighted to work alongside the many others giving their time and energy to promoting the safe enjoyment of alcohol in the UK, an invaluable social element in our public life,” said Robert.
“Pubs, clubs and bars are places to share the company of new friends and old, to socialise on equal terms, and to engage in common endeavour. Those who manage them carry a great responsibility and deserve our support and respect. PASS, Best Bar None and National Pubwatch, through their commitment to supportive partnership engagement with both the trade and those responsible for ensuring the law is observed, perform a great service.
“I am very pleased to have been involved in this endeavour and wish it continuing success”
