7/12/23: National Pubwatch Star Award presented to John Miley, the recently retired Licensing Manager at Broxtowe Borough Council. The award was presented to John by NPW Regional Representatives David Lucas and Paul Horton at the Institute of Licensing’s Regional Meeting at Crowne Plaza Hotel. Nottingham.
John has carried out various roles in licensing over a career which started as early as 1973, when he commenced work as a management trainee for the Grand Metropolitan; this marking the start of 26 years working in the licensed trade.
In 2001 John joined Nottinghamshire Police as a civil support Police Licensing Officer. During his time with the police, he was involved in many licensing initiatives which aimed to reduce alcohol related crime and disorder and make Nottinghamshire a safer place to go out and socialise.
John then moved to Broxtowe Borough Council, as Licensing Manager where he served for 20 years before retiring in September 2023.
John continued to be very active in partnership working and was involved in numerous initiatives. In particular he and his team were involved in drugs awareness training which saw record numbers of licensees across Broxtowe Borough gaining awards.
He was also keen to work in partnership with other responsible authorities, having regular meetings and involved in the enforcement of problematic premises.
John has been involved in countless licensing groups, with roles including the LGA’s Policy Forum, Best Bar None, Purple Flag, BII and local licensing officer groups.
He is probably best known for his current roles as National Chair for NALEO, and Vice Chair of the IoL’s East Midlands Region.
Paul Horton said: “John is a perfect example of a licensing practitioner who consistently goes the extra mile. He showed a high degree of skill and flair in his professional role, a friend to all and a fantastic advocate for partnership working”.
John was also recently awarded the Institute of Licensing ‘Jeremy Allen Award’ for excellence in licensing.
